Frequently Asked Questions
Get to know the SkimSafe® Card
SkimSafe® Protection Card
The SkimSafe® card contains a jamming device that is activated if someone tries to electronically read your contactless debit or credit cards. The SkimSafe® card makes it impossible for your card details to be read.
Just place the SkimSafe® card in your wallet or purse along with your payment cards and you’re instantly protected. A SkimSafe® card protects 4 payment cards placed either side of it, that is a total of 8 cards.
Your SkimSafe® card has a five year lifespan. Make sure you register your card and we’ll notify you when your SkimSafe® card is nearing the end of its lifetime.
All electronic products wear over time, and the SkimSafe® card is no different. Because this is a security product, we think it’s especially important to forewarn about the cards expected lifespan.
You can easily test your SkimSafe® card by keeping it next to your debit or credit card when you try to make a contactless payment. The card terminal will not be able to read your card details and take payment as the SkimSafe® card will block the card readers signals. If you try the transaction again but this time with SkimSafe® card held away from your card, the transaction will go through as normal.
The SkimSafe® card does not affect the magnetic stripe or the chip on your cards or interfere with any other device such as entry key fobs or smartphones.
Yes. The SkimSafe® card is the same size as a credit or debit card and can easily be placed where you would normally keep your payment cards.
Yes. The SkimSafe® card works worldwide, no matter where you are.
If you register your card, you will receive a reminder coming up to your 5 year anniversary reminding you that your card will be expiring soon and that you will no longer be protected.
Contactless Cards and Wireless Skimming/Contactless Skimming
Wireless skimming is a type of card theft where a scammer or thief steals card information by wirelessly scanning a contactless payment card with a card reading device. This device can be an actual card reader or a phone / app that contains Near Field Communication (NFC). Wireless skimming is also known as contactless skimming.
There is no upper limit, even if your card has a £30 contactless payment limit, thieves can still steal more than £30 from your card. Thieves are stealing your card details, not your card, which means they can make limitless transactions.
No. It is up to the online store to implement such security solutions and unfortunately, not all online stores do. Criminals can easily check which websites have low security, so they know where they’re likely to get away shopping with stolen card details.
Contactless cards and payments were introduced to provide a faster, more convenient way to pay for smaller transactions without having to enter your PIN code.
